Artist Profile: Chris Hoyle

Born in 1962, Chris Hoyle is a self taught photographer living in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.

After finishing school in 1978, he gained experience in darkroom techniques and processing. In 1982, during three years service in the army he bought his first camera. Upon leaving Chris to turned his attentions to music, playing in a number of bands over the following years. Having left formal education at 16, he returned to study film and photography in his twenties, and gained an HND in Countryside Management in 1996.

In 1998 he discovered surfing, and spent the following year traveling Europe in pursuit of waves. Settling in Scarborough on New Year's Eve 2000, and inspired by the beauty of his newly found home he turned his attentions back to photography.
