SWAP is introducing a carbon offsetting scheme aimed specifically at air travel when participating in any of the volunteer placement schemes. SWAP is offering individuals to donate a small amount to 'offset' their carbon emissions when travelling overseas

SWAP Carbon offsetting travel

Carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels are causing the Earth's climate to change and warm, which will have catastrophic results if we do not act to reduce them. Carbon dioxide emissions are about 40% higher than they were before the Industrial Revolution and at their highest levels in recorded history, covering over 650,000 years.

The Debate

There is much controversy over carbon offsetting. One side of the argument is that carbon offsetting is simply a 'guilt-free' method of continuing to travel and essentially pass the problem onto someone else. The other side argues that people are going to continue to travel and carbon offsetting is the most effective solution at this point in time. SWAP supports the promotion of environmental issues and methods of minimising these issues.

The Projects

Renewable energy typically refers to wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and other non-carbon producing energy sources.  When you support renewable energy, Carbonfund.org purchases and retires renewable energy certificates (RECs). This helps increase the demand for renewable energy and is driving our market transformation to a clean energy future.

Energy efficiency is the application of new technologies, processes or practices to achieve the same benefit or improved benefit while using less energy.  Energy efficiency opportunities can be found in all sectors of the economy: industrial, commercial, transportation and residential. When you support energy efficiency, Carbonfund.org purchases and retires "carbon credits", including Chicago Climate Exchange Carbon Financial Instruments (CFIs) or Environmental Resources Trust-certified energy efficiency credits.

Flying overseas

SWAP is a strong promoter of alternative and renewable energy sources and so is aware of the implications of air travel. However one of our main aims is to support the development of volunteer projects overseas and in process assist in environmental programmes and supporting local communities. SWAP is encouraging individuals to appreciate and be more aware of air travel when they are involved in any of our volunteer placements. SWAP offers the opportunity to donate the eqvuialent of an individuals carbon emission production when visting one of the destinations. Carbon offsetting may not be the ideal solution but we believe that whilst individuals are going to continue to fly and no alternative solution can be proposed then a donation should be made to support these projects.

SWAP is a supporter of  non-profit organisations promoting carbon offsetting projects and supporting the development of alternative and renewable energy sources.
