The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 50,000 members and 90 chapters worldwide.

The core activities and campaigns that the Surfrider Foundation uses to protect our oceans, waves and beaches fall into the categories of Clean Water, Beach Access, Beach Preservation and Protecting Special Places.

Capitol Chapter VolunteersVolunteerism is the life blood of the grassroots Surfrider Foundation USA with its 60+ volunteer-driven chapters located along the East, West, Gulf, Puerto Rican, and Hawaiian coasts. At the chapter-level, there are all kinds of volunteer activities to do, from beach cleanups to water testing to educational presentations to writing newsletters to attending city council meetings to many other things.

At our headquarters in San Clemente, CA we offer university level students the ability to do worthwhile internships. Internships are typically available in the Environmental, Legal, Marketing, International and Chapter departments.


Created in 2007 by his parents, Harriet Zaretsky and Stephen Henry, the Dillon Henry Memorial Internship was created to honor Dillon’s memory, recognize his commitment to the oceans and coastal environment and help young people to pursue a career in coastal and marine conservation. This endowment provides funding for the Surfrider Foundation to hire and train the best and brightest interns each year. Funds are used to provide stipends for two qualified internships annually (listed below) to work with Surfrider Foundation’s Environmental Department and/or Legal Department. Interns are required to work a minimum of twelve weeks and must attend an informal meeting with the fund’s donors during their internship.
