Q.Where does my money go?

The money raised from the volunteer placements and surf packages supports the further development of the projects on the island. In the case of the Mentawais, the money is used to continue the progress of each project which involves continued investment to ensure the success of each project for the future.

Q.Im not from the UK, does this matter for the volunteer programme?

Not at all, SWAP is British based but is open to individuals worldwide.

Q.What shall I bring?

During your stay, all accomodation and food is provided. You are given the opportunity to pick up any extra supplies on Siberut island on the way to Siloinak. First aid and emergency supplies are available, however it is useful to have your own personal first aid equipment and other equipment. Remember, it can rain at anytime on the island, so bring a waterproof with you!

Q.What visa do I require for the volunteer programme?

For British residents you must apply for a 60-day visa from Indonesian Consulate in London via the Foreign Office website (www.fco.gov.uk). A 30-day visa on arrival is issued, however due to the frequency of transport back from the island, the volunteer placement exceeds the 30-day limit. For other nationalities, please check your International Consulate for visa requirements.

Q.What is the surf like in the Mentawais?

The surf in the Mentawais ranges from intense barreling waves of E-Bay to rippable and playful walls of NiPussi. The nearby island of Nyang Nyang provides a wide range of waves for the intermediate to the more advanced surfer.

Q.What boards and equipment shall I bring?

Due to the isolation of the island, it is essential to bring a variety of surf equipment. Some equipment can be purchased on Siberut island. The surf can range from 2-10ft+ in the season so a quiver of boards is recommended, ranging from a fun shortboard to an 6'8-7'6 semi-gun for the bigger days. Spare leashes, rashvest/sun protection, ding repair kits are essential.

Q.What insurance do I require?

We recommend a full insurance cover. Mentawai Adventure wishes for a insurance including MediVac. This is compulsory for visiting Siloinak island. Due to its isolation and proximity to Sumatra, a full MediVac insurace policy is essential

Please read our cancellation policy. Mentawai Adventure offers full refunds or the option of booking at a later date

Q.What else is there to do on the island, apart from surfing!?

Although a small island, there is lots to do! The beuatiful coral-fringed reefs are perfect for snorkelling, swimming. For our volunteers, there is the opportunity to get involved in a range of projects. Your free time can be dedicated to surfing and exploring the island!

Q.Is there Malaria on the island?

Siloinak island has very few mosquitos. However for precautions, each hut is provided with a mosiquito net. It is recommended due to travelling via Padang a form of malaria prevention is recommended. Please check before booking.
